By turning offshore projects into Ohio jobs, ICC earns accolade for outstanding service

Information Control Corporation continues to help accelerate Columbus’ growth in technology and leadership, earning a finalist selection in outstanding service at this month’s TechColumbus Innovation Awards.   The awards spotlighted companies that had defined, introduced and marketed a technology-based service in 2011.  Among companies with at least 250 employees, special mention for Outstanding Service went to ICC’s Information Factory, an onshore data integration delivery service.

Outstanding Service was measured by groundbreaking technical innovation, superior business approach and opening of new markets, and measurable revenue growth, cost reduction, changes in market position or market share, and impact on company employees or organization.

Retaining Ohio’s young talent

While facing difficult competitive offshore enterprises, ICC has thrived by emphasizing efficient, creative, face-to-face service. Finding the best young talent to provide that service is another challenge, because of a persistent shortage of skilled college graduates.

“The supply is as tight as I’ve ever seen it,” said Rick Ritzler, ICC Vice President of Recruiting, who has worked in that field for nearly 15 years.  “We want to build and train the workforce of tomorrow, not just cherry-pick experienced people – because you can’t find enough ready talent today, and every projection you see only implies that this will get worse.”

ICC’s Leadership Development Academy is that magnet to attract and retain Ohio’s top graduates in computer information systems (CIS) and management information systems (MIS).  The Academy ensures an early career jump-start that focuses on the individual’s unique skills and goals.

Several graduates who were raised in Ohio said the Academy attracted them to work for ICC and stay in the state.   “I like working locally for a global company and having a little bit more freedom to do what I want and decide the direction of where I want to go,” said Phoebe Hyder, who grew up in Westerville, graduated from Miami University in computer science in 2008 and is now a .NET developer. 

Tony Brown, who grew up in Johnstown, graduated from Ohio Northern University in computer engineering in 2009 and immediately had a job offer in Chicago.  “The same day, I got a call from ICC,” said Brown, now an ICC software developer and engineer. “I’m a big fan of Columbus, and it’s actually a big tech city. I liked what I saw at ICC and wanted to stay.  It was an ironic twist coming to ICC, because an opportunity came up on one of my early client projects at ICC to consult in Australia for a few months, and so I have been lucky to experience both local and global engagements so quickly in my career.”

Jim Gallo

In his article Applying Agile Methods to Data Warehouse Projects, Jim discusses how Agile methods can be applied to the building of analytical databases — data warehouses, data marts, operational data stores, etc.  When the work associated with designing the databases and integrating the data is driven from the business side, project costs can be held to a minimum and business value can be delivered more quickly. 

Jim Gallo is a recognized Business Intelligence expert and has published a number of articles on the practical realities of BI/DW. He is a regular speaker at conferences and industry-related events. He has led a number of large, complex BI projects for Fortune 1000 companies in addition to delivering value to federal and state governments and international clients.
